Science
At Starks Field we believe that science stimulates and excites pupils’ natural curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. Through science pupils learn how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change – impacting on industry, business and medicine and improving the quality of life.
The school places a high priority on the development of pupils’ ability to work scientifically. The skills of working scientifically are taught alongside the scientific content outlined in the Opening Worlds Curriculum and in the National Curriculum science programmes of study. When and wherever possible we make use of the outside environment to develop pupils’ scientific knowledge and skills. At Starks Field we have our own pond area where pupils can learn about habitats, plants, seasons and animals through hands-on experiences.
Pupils’ early investigative skills are nurtured and developed in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
‘Enabling environments’ are set up, both inside the classrooms and outdoors. Through play pupils are able to explore and investigate the provision, developing their questioning skills and their ability to think critically and creatively and building on their natural curiosity about their ‘Understanding the World’, one of the specific areas of learning. The outdoor learning environment in EYFS also has its own planting area where pupils grow plants and learn how to care for them.
