PSHE
BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE
PSHE plays a fundamental part in our curriculum in supporting pupils in obtaining the knowledge and skills they need to manage their lives successfully now and in the future. Through PSHE we teach pupils the importance of being healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class, school council and supporting nominated charities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop their confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
We encourage pupils to follow our school motto ‘Be The Best You Can Be’ in order to reflect the high aspirations we have for our school community. Our six core values of self-responsibility, resilience, tolerance, honesty, respect and kindness are evident across the school and celebrated in our weekly celebration assemblies.
PSHE is taught every week, using the Kapow curriculum, which aims to help pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to lead confident, healthy and fulfilling lives. The intention is for pupils to understand themselves and others, form positive relationships and make informed choices that support their wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around them.
The scheme encourages pupils to think with empathy, integrity and self-awareness, recognising how their actions and attitudes contribute to their communities. It supports them in developing respect for diversity, managing change and understanding their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
ANTI-BULLYING
An aspect taught through PSHE lessons is anti-bullying. Our aim is to develop a school ethos in which bullying is regarded as unacceptable. Pupils learn what bullying is and the impact it has on a person. We support pupils to understand that there are different forms of bullying, for example cyber-bullying and prejudice-based bullying around race, sex, religion and belief, gender, transgender, sexual orientation and disability.
AIMS and STRATEGIES
- Celebrating Anti-Bullying Week;
- Ensuring all members of our school have an understanding of what bullying is;
- Promoting an environment where pupils are free from threat and bullying;
- Ensuring that pupils are confident to speak out against bullying and inform adults about incidents of bullying;
- Sharing assemblies to promote awareness.
SEX AND RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION (SRE)
Our aim is to teach pupils about the physical development of their bodies as they grow into adults. During their time at the school we explore moral questions and dilemmas, relationships and the importance of family life. Our curriculum for PSHE is intended to act as a vehicle through which teachers and parents/carers can help pupils to understand more fully the world they live in and their responsibilities.
Sex and Relationship Education is delivered by the class teachers in agreement with parents/carers. We teach pupils about the parts of the body and how these work and explain the changes that happen during puberty. The scheme forms a celebration of life and seeks to develop an understanding of the complexities of human relationships. At Starks Field Primary School we work closely with parents/carers as we believe that pupils benefit from having a consistent message with regard to growing up and developing an informed understanding about sex, about developing healthy relationships and about issues such as consent, respecting personal space and harassment.
Starks Field Primary School works closely with parents as we believe that children benefit from being giving consistent message about their changing bodies. Find our RSE policy here.
