Starks Field Primary School

Be The Best You Can Be helps our pupils learn the importance of our six core values: kindness, respect, bravery, resilience, enthusiasm and responsibility.

  1. Curriculum
  2. Physical Education

Physical Education

At Starks Field Primary School, we recognise the significant contribution PE makes to the health and well-being of all our pupils.  We provide an inclusive and progressive PE curriculum throughout the school with every class from Year 1 to Year 6 taking part in one hour of PE each week.  Our Reception class are also allocated weekly hall time to enable pupils to explore the gym equipment and develop their movement and dance skills. Our pupils also participate in Skip2BFit, an initiative which aims to improve fitness levels in all pupils, and the Daily Mile, which takes place at the end of every lunchtime.

Our class teachers deliver safe and inclusive lessons which focus on a number of sports including football, tag rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, tennis, cricket, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, dance and gymnastics. We have also hosted sports coaches to deliver games lessons to some of our KS2 pupils.

We understand both the health and safety benefits of learning to swim; our Year 4 pupils attend weekly swimming lessons at a local pool as part of the curriculum for part of the school year. The school buys into a local authority-organised programme with qualified swimming instructors leading the sessions. At the beginning of the swimming sessions, an instructor visits our school to deliver a lesson on water safety. We aim for every pupil to be able to swim 25m competently and confidently using a number of strokes by the time they leave Starks Field at the end of Year 6.

It is our aim at Starks Field that by the time our pupils move on to secondary education they have developed the physical, social and psychological skills required by young sports people.

We are very proud to have been awarded with the Gold School Games Mark Award this year. It recognises the quality of our whole school PE provision and our passion for each child to enjoy leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
